Johann Henrich Leuchter (Henry Leichter) was born in Wagenfurth, Germany, December 31, 1840. He immigrated to the United States in 1857. He served in the Union Army 7th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Company B, he was a 4th Sergeant, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Army Corps. 1861. He was wounded at the Battle of Antietam September 17, 1862. He married Susan Whipkey, November 9, 1862. His occupation was a Wheelwright or Maker of Wagons. He had nine children. Only two children survived an outbreak of Diphtheria in 1871 and Scarlet Fever in 1881. The oldest son George Salvester and the youngest daughter Laura Pearl survived. George had seven children Laura was never married. Henry Leichter died October 6, 1903 in Rock Lick, West Virginia.
